Looking for similar to Elfen Lied

I just watched this for the first time and blew my mind (minus the few Pervy moments) Anyone have any similar shows or films with sci-fi/horror themes? I also really loved the character development, and paired with the awesome gore it really made an impression on me. I do prefer animation styles pre-2015 (earlier the better) but open to any suggestions. Also big fan of Higurashi when they cry and another. Thank you!!
