Dog’s uterus is attached to her colon via scar tissue
I would love any advice a vet can give here. We are considering adopting a two year old golden retriever who has some pre existing health conditions.
She ate two rocks in January and went through a bowel obstruction surgery. Her incision opened and she had to have fluid drained from her abdomen daily for about a week, and a second surgery ensued. As a result, we are told her uterine horns became attached to her colon and that she cannot have a traditional ovariohysterectomy spay. Instead, they say she needs an ovariectomy.
1) What are general health risks for a dog whose uterus is attached to her colon? Is this likely life shortening for her? Possibly? Is this probable? 2) Is an ovariectomy more expensive than a traditional spay? Can any vet perform this procedure? 3) Will she still bleed with no ovaries? 4) What are the signs of uterine infection? Can anything be done to save her if she contracts one? 5) Should she eat rocks again, what warning signs should we watch out for?
Thank you so much. I found this dog by chance, and I am not comfortable with the conditions she is currently being kept in - I want to save her. But I am worried about her well being overall and want to be educated about the risks. I am not sure the current owner is the best source for me to learn from so turning to the veterinarian gods of Reddit.
