Do Hindus prefer to be called "দাদা/বৌদি" instead of "ভাই/ভাবী"?
I am an Agnostic and don't really care about religion. I have a Hindu colleague in the office who everyone else calls "দাদা" but I call him "ভাই" because I do not want to discriminate against him for his religion. Everyone else is ভাই for me so he is also ভাই for me. I assume he also doesn't mind because he never said anything about it to me.
Recently one of my close Hindu friends got married and I am calling his wife ভাবী instead of বৌদি, but I might have noticed some distress in her face when I call her ভাবী in front of others. It might be all in my head but I am curious.
Do Hindus like it when we interact with them with words like জল, দাদা, and বৌদি or do they feel singled out or awkward that we suddenly change our usual language because of them?
