Is Seattle really so high society?
I've been rewatching the original Frasier series with my girlfriend for the first time since the early 2000s. Now I'm 20 years older, questions spring to mind that never entered my head as a teenager. The biggest question: is Seattle really such a haven of high culture and society? Elite gentlemen's clubs, restaurants, all the rest of the things the Crane brothers are so snobbishly obsessed with?
Part of this question might be cultural: I'm British, and most of our wealth and high status people is concentrated in London and geographically nearby to it. Our large regional cities have nowhere near the same prestige when it comes to high culture. Seattle is apparently only the 15th largest city in the US, so it's hard for me to reconcile the image of a relatively "middle of the road" sized city with what the show makes us believe is a thriving community of the wealthy, snobby elites.
The only way I could think to test this question was to Google how many Michelin Star restaurants Seattle has. Surely some of these places the Crane brothers obsess over would have at least one star, right? To my surprise, I read that Seattle doesn't even have a single Michelin Star. Not the most accurate test in the world, but it made me wonder... how realistic exactly is the picture painted by Frasier?
