Other sci-fi games that capture the feeling "space is SCARY"
To be clear, I'm not talking about just horror games set in space like Dead Space, although it *could* include that. I mean more the sense of dread, unease. That humanity is floating in a vast, endless void with countless dangers, and only just *may* be able to survive.
The one that jumps to mind is Freespace 1 and 2. Despite being combat flight sims the primary antagonists of that game are the Shivans, unknowable bio-cybernetic lifeforms with unknown goals. Who's first "great war" with humanity was nothing more than the loss of a small scouting fleet. The first primary force of 80 juggernaut class warships (each a match for a entire fleet if not more), bulldozed its way into human space and destroyed a star to create a new subspace warp gate to another point in the universe. This destroyed more of their *own* super-warships in the process than were ever destroyed in combat, and casts their entire invasion into doubt if it was anything more than someone building a highway over a colony of bugs.
"Winning" the game consists of running for the exit for the whole solar system and sealing it off before it wipes out humanity and its alien allies.
System Shock, the original Halo trilogy games, Crying Suns would be other examples as well.
