Anti-Asian Hate

Just venting -- just had a meeting with a student from Asia who was working in a coffee shop and confronted by a group of boys and told to go back to where she came from. Made fun of her appearance and did the "China eyes" thing. The other patrons saw what was happening and didn't do a thing. This is not the first instance among our grad students, and it's the women who get targeted. We even have a junior faculty member -- a woman from China originally -- who had to deal with the same nonsense. I really despair of our country. In this case, it was a group of black boys in a mostly black environment, so I had to try to explain the complicated racial politics of this. (She couldn't understand how black people could be so racist.)
