"Appreciation Week" Rant

I realize that this is mostly just a rant/place to vent about a (in the grand scheme of things) truly inconsequential manner, but the announcement over our system's loudspeaker earlier today brought this memory back to the surface.

Principal announces this morning that this week is Counselor Appreciation Week, encouraging students to drop in and express their gratitude. This got me thinking about last year's Teacher Appreciation Week, and the lunch that was put on for us teachers by the ASB. This lunch began, as the name would suggest, at lunchtime, so the majority of us teacher couldn't make our way to the location in the middle of campus until a few minutes into lunch since we were, of course, teaching right up to that point. When I arrive with four other members of my department about 3 minutes into the lunch period, we come to find that the sandwich halves that had been provided by ASB (one of those catering orders from Jersey Mike's) had already run out, and the only offerings left were cookies and fruit salad. You know all the individuals who had been able to get to the lunch in time to get sandwiches (and were eating them as we arrived) because they hadn't been teaching the 55 minutes leading up to lunch and arrived before the bell for lunch had even rung? The majority of the front office staff, numerous PIFs, and the entire counseling department. Now obviously, I am a grown adult. Was I going to die because I didn't get a half a Jersey Mike's sandwich? No, of course not. I thanked ASB for my chocolate chip cookie and grape/cantaloupe combo. Was I kind of internally taken aback that there was not nearly enough lunch items to cover all the teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week due to non-teachers having the shamelessness to snatch them all up before we could get there? Uh, yeah.

I just can't imagine heading down to the main office tomorrow morning and taking the bagels/pastries offerings that I know PTA is providing for the counselors, especially to the point where one or more of the counselors are unable to actually partake in the treat that was provided in the name of appreciation for their title. I guess the lack of self-awareness in my colleagues is what got me last year.

I definitely did end that day hungry though. Will definitely pack personal snacks for this year's Appreciation lunch.
