What are some reasonable actions I can take right now?

I’ve been prepping for a few months now and I’m worried about my situation.

I’m a queer POC (indigenous American) living in a red state and stuck in a lease here until summer of 2026. After that my partner and I plan to GTFO to somewhere solidly blue. We have narrowed it down to a shortlist.

I have some financial concerns. I racked up quite a bit of debt when one of my parents was really sick about 3 years ago and have 4 accounts in collections. My total payments across all of them are $1300/mo until May of next year when everything will be paid off. I’m actively making payments now but I’m afraid of consequences for the remaining amounts should the rule of law be disposed of, which it seems is happening quickly.

I work for myself (freelance web dev) and business has been steady but I’m afraid that won’t be the case in the coming months.

From a financial perspective, what should I do? Should I use any spare income to stock food and essentials or pay down debts? Or both? I’m really worried about an economic depression (or collapse at this point) and access to food in that case. We live in a high crime area and a food desert. I want to buy a gun. I want to stock clothes in case we can’t buy new ones when we need them. I think I’m spinning a bit and just looking for some logical guidance? Any input appreciated, tough love included! Thanks!
