Can you still read a paper map?

With everyone having some kind of GPS in their pocket, no one needs the paper maps. Can you still navigate by using one? I've been thinking about handling a map to my nieces and nephew to have them plan a trip between 2 cites. I want to see if they can do it without using a phone.
