Why were old Anime dubs filled with so much profanity?

For those who don’t understand what I mean, some anime dubs way back in the early 90s used to insert a bunch of cursing in their dubs as Manga Entertainment was infamous for enforcing that aspect as many of the old anime dubs they had often had characters constantly cursing as I mean like practically nonstop.
