So to prevent the tariffs Canada and Mexico just told Trump what they were already/previously doing?
So in Prime Minister Trudeau's statement he talked about a $1.3 billion investment into the border... An investment already made and announced on December 18th... A month before Trump even took office. I guess the fentanyl czar is new but it's probably not going to have as much power.
In Mexico's statement, President Claudia Sheinbaum said she'll said 10,000 national guard to the boarder. Now this was done back in 2021 under the previous administrations (Claudia Sheinbaum was elected in 2024, Biden was president of the US in 2021) and I can't find if those troops were still there at all, especially with crossings going down. The interesting thing was the promise by the US to stop the flow of guns going the other way... something Trump neglected to mention.
So after the weekend of drama, of speeches, of news shows talking about this for 30 minutes and late night tweets... The U.S. got nothing substantial out of it. This was all a big drama that just gets kicked down the road until March 5th. Markets had big sell offs and several industries were left unsure what was going to happen - for the status quo to just remain? What a waste of political power and time. All this did was show Canada and Mexico that the US as a trade partner under Trump can't be 100% trusted - and if anything spread anti-Americanism especially in Canada.
