Unpopular opinion on pen pals?
I would like to have 2-3 pen pals I regularly write with. I have fallen in love with all things stationary this past year and would love to share them with someone who will write back.
The thing is, I don’t want to write out a list of things I’m into and I don’t want you to either. I think being a good match for a pen pal is having similar expectations of what to write. My favorite types of letters to send and receive are brief stories, a small window into your life. Think of a cozy YouTube vlog, but in writing. I want to forget where I am for a moment and be transported to where you are when I read your letter. I don’t want you to address any of the details I include in my letter and I don’t want to comment on the details in yours. Through our writings, we may never learn each other’s age, gender, relationship status, or any other defining detail. But we’ll have a clear image of the sweet, serene moments the other has experienced.
That’s not to say that some of our interests won’t eventually be reflected in our writing. Please don’t misunderstand!! What I mean is that I don’t want to pick a pen pal based on shared interests alone.
I think the number one reason people stop responding to pen pals is because it feels like a chore… having to reread their letter and make sure you comment/respond to every word they said. I hope by changing the paradigm a bit, it will make things easier. You may even forget what it was the person last wrote. It doesn’t matter! Just write a new story about something that happened to you. Each letter should be able to stand on its own. And the collection of letters could be reread in any order!
It may seem like I’m describing us as writing “at” each other. That’s not the case. Think of each letter as a short story the author personally sent you. My one ask though, is that your stories are always true.
I hope this didn’t come off as rude in any way. But if someone understands and identifies with the idea of these ramblings, please private message me!
Edit: want to clarify that the letter doesn’t have to be long either. Im open to long letters, but a 1/2 page to 1 page would be fine!
