Artists that were hated at first for their different ideas but are now beloved or have cult following?

I was wondering this because it seems like most artists in general are afraid to push against the grain in fear of backlash or embarrassing themselves. But has there been any artists that received backlash, continued with their different ideas and ended up with beloved in the future for their different ideas?
