Cheap car with high resale value?

Looking at getting a new or courtesy car— what are some options with a good ratio of low cost and high resale value? Don’t really care about appearance or anything else except maybe safety? I’m a medical resident looking for a low cost option that works for right now. Have two kids in car seats (maybe three in the future) but don’t have to be able to transport them in this car. Nervous about Kia with all the Kia Boyz break-ins as we don’t have a garage. Appreciate the recs!!
